Subject: Two great new programs to help students – free in Fall 2012 only!

Dear GRCC educational partner –

I am very pleased to let you know about two new programs we are offering to help our youngest students adjust more quickly to life and school in the US, and to help all new academic level students get the grades and qualifications they need to get into top US universities.

Both programs are required for the target groups of students (details below).  The cost of each one-quarter program is $100.  Because of the late notice of these programs, and the fact that it would be difficult to inform students who have already applied for Fall 2012 about additional charges, we are going to provide a scholarship to each new Fall 2012 student for these fees.  In other words, the programs will be free to all Fall 2012 students.  Students will be charged as of Winter 2013.

Here are the programs:

FOUNDATION FOR SUCCESS (FFS)

·        Purpose: Help young new students adjust to life and school in the US quickly and well

·        Required for: All students under 18 years of age (Fall 2012: Born after September 24, 1994)

·        Cost: $100 (no charge for new students in Fall 2012)

·        Hours per week: 2 (one hour of class/home room, one hour of meeting with peer mentor)

·        Program details:

o       Peer mentors – Older, successful students will be provided to mentor each new student.  These “big brothers” or “big sisters” will be of a similar background and same language (if possible) as the new students, and will offer them great help and support in navigating their new life in the US.

o       Home room – Weekly meetings and classes will be provided to help students with all life issues: living, social life, study in the US, adjusting to culture shock, making friends, living a healthy lifestyle, safety, and our staff will check in with students and make sure they are doing well.

o       Report to parents – A report to parents will be provided by email in the parent’s language midway during the first quarter.  The report will tell parents how they are doing in school and how they are adjusting to life in the US.

COLLEGE EXPERIENCE

·        Purpose: Teach new college academic-level students how to be successful college students in the US and maximize their chances to transfer to top US universities

·        Required for: All new students taking college-level classes in their first quarter

·        Cost: $100 (no charge for new students in Fall 2012)

·        Hours per week: 3 class hours

·        Program details:

o       University transfer help – Students will learn what it takes to transfer to top US universities, and how to maximize their chances for admission.

o       College success strategies – The US college and university system is different from that of other countries.  Students will learn about and practice academic success skills that, if applied, should help them get better grades.

o       American classroom expectations – Students can be most successful in the US only if they know, and conform to, the expectations of their professors.  Students will learn what professors expect and how to meet those expectations.

We are very excited to offer these two new programs to your students.  We believe both of them will help our students be better adjusted, happier and more successful at GRCC and in the United States.
